Interview with Teddy Sheringham, former Manchester Utd football player

Enough was enough for Teddy Sheringham. After six trophy-less years at Tottenham, the striker has quit his beloved Spurs and headed for Man United – and for one reason – to win. Teddy Sheringham will begin his 15th season in English League football in August and he is still looking for his first major honour.

That very fact is the reason why he England striker left Tottenham, he club he idolised as a boy, to join Manchester United. The desire to end his career with a couple of winners medals.

The 31-year-old striker had grown increasingly frustrated at Spurs’ lack of silverware in his time at the club, and with perhaps only four or five years left of his playing career, he was desperate to add some medals to his well-deserved international recognition.

“I came to Tottenham because I wanted to win things but it didn’t happen,” shrugs Teddy. “It was unrealistic to expect Spurs to win the League. It takes the best players to do that – people like Adams, Shearer and Keane – and it bothered me that the club we’re not signing those sort of players.

“I haven’t won anything in my career and I desperately want to have some winners’ medals to show at the end of my football life. It’s about time I did. “That is why I have come to Manchester United. They are the biggest and the best in Britain. “Obviously there is the added bonus of competing in the European Cup and I am really looking forward to the challenge.” With Argentine star Gabriel Batistuta and Middlesbrough’s Brazilian ace Juninho being touted as the replacements for Old Trafford legend Eric Cantona, United fans were shocked to find that Alex Ferguson had signed England international Sheringham. But the former Millwall striker isn’t daunted by the prospect of following in the footsteps of the King of the Reds

“I’m sure people will make comparisons between Eric and me but I can only do my best as a player and hopefully that will be good enough for United,” he says. “The challenge doesn’t worry me. If I didn’t think I could handle it I wouldn’t be here.”

Ironically Sheri will make his League bow in the red of United at White Hart Lane as the Champions kick off their defence of the title with a trip to Tottenham on the first day of the new season. “What a great fixture that is, eh! he says. “I’m really looking forward to that one – and the Charity Shield. It should be an exciting start to the season.”

One that Teddy hopes will lead to some silverware – at last. Meybe end his career with a couple of winners medals.

European Football Cup

IS THE EUROPEAN CUP GOING TO BE UNITED’S BIG TARGET AGAIN THIS YEAR?

It is the one we all want, but that’s only because we haven’t managed to win it yet. That competition will be tougher this time, with extra teams involved, but we have to be confident after last season when we went so close. I still think that the Premiership is the competition we will be judged by though.”

OLE: “I don’t like to look ahead as far as the European Cup. We have a lot of league games before that competition even starts and you alway have to look at the next game as the most important. The league must be our priority until European competition starts:’
CAN UNITED GET BETTER THAN LAST SEASON DESPITE THE FACT THAT ERIC CANTONA HAS LEFT? PETER: “We have a very strong side this season. You could have looked at us in the Charity Shield Wembley and said that we didn’t play particularly well, but that was just a pre-season game. There was still a week to go until the start of the season. I did not feel at my very best at Wembley and I’m sure a lot of the lads felt the same way:”

“At Manchester United we are always striving to get better, but then so is everybody else. The championship race should have a few good teams involved this season and that will just serve to make our task harder:”

HOW GOOD IS TEDDY SHERINGHAM?
OLE: “He has looked a great player in training so far. His move to the club might mean that there is another guy here
battling for one of the front positions, but that can only be good for Manchester United as a whole. t~ From a personal’ point of view, I can only learn from experienced
